Carpet Stains

Carpet stains

What Stains can be removed?

A lot of the time when A-Plus gets a call from a customer it is about stains on carpet. The question is almost always “can you get it out”. The answer to this question should always be not all stains can be removed. We always say that the only way to see if it can be removed is to try. If it is possible to remove it we will get it out.

Sugar and oil stains.

Most dark colored stains are sugar or oil based stains. These can be removed 87% of the time. Stains in this category include soda, tea, coffee, and non-red juices.

Body fluids

So what about stains like blood, vomit, and urine? Like most stains, these need to be addressed fast. The sooner you get them removed the better. The trick with blood is not to use hot water or cleaning products. these things can acutely set the stain in on the carpet making them impossible to remove.

Mystery stains

Sometimes you can get stains though no fault of your own. These include water rings, filtration lines under doors or around walls, and yellowing. Water stains are hit or miss they could easily come out or not. Filter lines requires using a special spotter and manually scrubbing them with a towel. ( Do to the extra labor involved, this process may cost more than you would like.) Yellowing is also a hit or miss stain that may come out easy or impossible.

Remove it fast!

The bottom line is that no one can guarantee that they will get stains out of your carpet. What seams like a easy stain to remove could be impossible to remove. But speed is your friend, the faster you treat a stain the better luck you will have removing it.

Dust Mites And Carpet

Your carpet is a great place for dust mites to live. They are a big reason that you have allergies. We are going to give you some information about how to remove the dust mites from your home.

What is a dust mite?

Dust mites in carpet

They are in the same family as spiders. They feed off dead skin, pet dander, & dust.

They find a home in every residence. Dust mites are attracted to moist, warm areas of your home.

They are in your carpet and upholstery.

Just like any other animal they go to where they can find food. So carpet and upholstery is a great place for them because it is one of the biggest air filter in your home.

How do you get rid of them?

  1. Heat is the easiest way to kill dust mites. Steam cleaning your carpets and having your upholstery cleaned with hot water is the easiest way to kill them. EPA recommends having your carpets cleaned once a year.
  2. In-between Steam cleanings using a good vacuum with a HEPA filter at least 2 times a week.

3 Reasons to Do Spring Cleaning.

The EPA (Environment Protection Agency) recommends homes with children or pets have carpet cleaned every 6-12 months.  Proper cleaning actually improves the health of your home by removing pollens, mold spores, dander, pollutants, and soils.

Carpet Fibers

When choosing new carpet for your home here is some information about the 4 different fibers. We want you to have the most information about what you are buying. We put together a little information about carpet fibers.

  1. Olefin – Also known as Polypropylene, olefin has an excellent stain resistant property and is difficult to stain. The fiber may mat down quickly in a less dense carpet. It is very oil loving and may get dirty quicker in areas near the kitchen and in homes with pets.
  2. Polyester – Often an alternative to nylon due to its cheaper price. Polyester has great stain resistant qualities. However, it isn’t as resilient as nylon, which may cause traffic lanes to look matted or pooled after heavy traffic. Also furniture indentations are difficult to remove after furniture is moved.
  3. Nylon – The Most durable fiber to withstand wear. It has great stain resistant properties and great wear ability. As well, it’s very resistant to oils. The only draw back to nylon is that it can be more susceptible to red dyes like kool aid and wine. Be very careful as strong chemicals like bleach, peroxides, toilet bowl cleaners, and other strong chemicals can cause color loss.
  4. Wool – A very durable and most luxurious fiber. Most oriental rugs are made of wool can last for 100 years or more. Wool is naturally fire resistant. However, wool is easily stained if spots are not quickly removed and wool is very vulnerable to bleach.

Note: To keep light colored carpet and area rugs looking great cleaning should be done before it appears dirty. Once the traffic lanes appear dirty, some damage is already done to the fibers. Cleaning can improve the appearance in this situation, but it may never return to its original color.

Keeping Carpet Clean

Your carpet needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. You need to clean your carpets so you can live in a clean home that is free of germs & dust. Your carpet is a great place for germs and dust to hide where you can’t get to it. We are going to talk about ways to keep your home healthy by keeping carpets clean.

Vacuuming The Carpet

The best way to keep your carpets clean in between deep cleaning is to vacuum regularly. The more you vacuum the better. We recommend vacuuming at least 2 times a week.

You will get the best results if you vacuum both vertically and horizontally. The forward pass is just a positioning stroke the back stroke is when the cleaning happens. Vacuuming this way will make sure that all the carpet fibers are reached and cleaned.

You should also make sure your vacuum is in good operating condition. This is very important. You should check and clean all the filters and hoses on your vacuum once a month.

Spot Cleaning

When you get a spot on your carpet stay calm. First please avoid using a high residue spotter (most spotters that you buy at the store). Using these spotters might take the stain out but leave a residue that will attract dirt right back to that spot. They also might not take the spot out but set the spot in and make it impossible to remove. If the spot is not treated with the correct spotter it can cause it to never come out.

Most spots use a white cloth use the spotter that your carpet cleaning professional left with you. Put the spotter on a white cloth and dab the stain. ( Never rub you can cause damage to the carpet fiber)

Grease or oil stains use rubbing alcohol to a white cloth and gently dab the spot. ( never rub, also never pour the alcohol directly on your carpet.)

Wet stains are best to use a wet vac to remove as much of the liquid and soil as possible. A wet vac will pull up the soil instead of pressing it down ( like a towel will).

After you remove the soil, treat the spot with a Quilty spot cleaner and gently wipe the spot with a damp towel.

Choosing A Carpet Cleaning Company.

You’ve probably seen the cheap coupons. Some carpet cleaners will come out to your home for as little as $5.99 per room. But what kind of cleaning will this get you?
TV specials have been done on both 20/20 and NBC Dateline that expose bait and switch carpet cleaners. The conclusion these shows come to is that carpet cleaning simply can’t be done for such low prices. So why do some companies advertise cleaning for so cheap?

It’s really so they can get their foot in the door. Once they come out to your home they fully intend on switching the price to something greater or forcing you to buy some of the extras. And if you don’t buy into their forced up sell, you’ll get a lousy cleaning.

Think about it. How could any company make money by sending an employee out to your home to do work for an hour and then include the cost of cleaning chemicals and machine usage. Professional carpet cleaning machines cost in the range of $15-$25 thousand dollars. There is no way a company can deliver all that to you for $5.99 a room or anywhere close.

So, what should a quality company do for you?

First, they should be able to either give an accurate estimate on the phone.  When they come to your home, if they try to pull a bait and switch before the cleaning, ask them to leave.

Professional carpet cleaning should include pre-vacuuming before the cleaning, followed by pre-spotting, and then either truck mounted steam cleaning or portable hot water extraction. All of this should be included in the cleaning price and is standard for the cleaning industry. If any spots should return within a reasonable amount of time after the cleaning, the company should return at no charge to take care of these spots for you.

The one exclusion may be urine stains or other extreme soil conditions that were noted before the cleaning. Do your homework. Make sure you don’t hire an unethical carpet cleaning company.

Fall In Love With Your Carpet Again.

Has the love faded? When you first met, your carpet was so warm, soft, fresh, and beautiful.

Remember how you would walk on your fresh, new carpet and feel as if you were walking on a fresh pillow? Your feet loved your carpet as much as you did.

The Fatal Mistake

But over the years, you took your carpet for granted. You didn’t vacuum it as often, forgot to take the time to remove emergency spots, and you didn’t schedule routine cleaning as needed.

Your once beloved, beautiful carpet was forgotten.

But this Valentine’s Day, you will get the pride and satisfaction back of having beautiful, fresh carpet throughout your home. You’ll love having a spot free, clean floor. It’s the next best thing to having NEW carpet.

Save Money & Time By Having Your Carpets Cleaned.

Right now it’s very likely you’re throwing your money away. You may as well pull a $20 bill out of your wallet and put it in the shredder.  Chances are you, your carpet, area rugs and floors lack the proper care to help them last as long as possible.

And I don’t blame you.  You’ve probably tried the “cheap” 5 rooms for $59 cleaning guys.  Then you were either so disappointed you swore to never call another cleaning company or worse…they ruined your carpet or floors.  Sometimes it’s more expensive to hire the “cheap” guys.

Or maybe you’ve tried the “do-it-yourself” approach. Chances are you gave up because it was too much work or your labor didn’t do much benefit for you carpet and floors.  Frankly, sometimes it’s more of a chore than you can handle.

Pet odor problems, soda spills, gum, wax, grease, wine, food spots, juice spills, kool-aid, coffee, make-up, stubborn stains, dirty traffic lanes, dirty grout?

It’s no problem.  We take care of these things all the time.  It’s what we do.
